Israelis have assembled across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader remarked on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership delayed state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the plan.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official explained the day's discussions finished without significant progress, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the two sides.

Key Matters in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid provision
  • Future administration of the territory

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No location feels like home now and until every captive are released none of us will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.

In front of the prime minister's home in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise needed for the abducted to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of Israelis want the conflict to end in exchange for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.

From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.

In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the morning of that day in the west side district, Rimal and locality areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the dusk comes, the fear comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the south part district.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city reported additional dead people had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south, medical staff reported.
