Putin Pledges Uninterrupted Oil Supplies to India in Rebuff of US Sanctions

Amid a unambiguous signal to the United States, President Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “continuous” shipments of energy resources to India. These remarks came when Putin and Modi met in the Indian capital and affirmed their bilateral ties were “resistant to outside influence.”

A Signal For the United States

Putin's comments, issued after the annual summit, seemed to be a direct challenge at Washington, that have sought to urge New Delhi into scaling back its close links with Moscow. This comes comes after recent Washington's moves, such as additional trade penalties against Indian goods because of its acquisition of Moscow's energy exports.

“Russia is a trustworthy source of energy resources and everything necessary for the advancement of India’s industry,” Putin said. “Moscow stands willing to keep ensuring the consistent flow of energy for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, though he did not mentioning oil explicitly, reinforced the sentiment by saying that “energy security has been a robust and important pillar of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Questioning US Interference

Prior to the talks, in a television interview, Putin had questioned US interference on India's oil imports. He argued, “When Washington can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, how can you deny India claim the same privilege?”

Putin's arrival represented his initial trip to India following the start of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi made a visible effort to demonstrate that the friendship between the two leaders remained intact.

An Unusual Welcome

In a unusual gesture, Modi welcomed directly Putin as he disembarked. The two shared a warm hug like old friends before having a one-on-one meal on Thursday evening.

The Indian prime minister later described India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and said it was “founded on shared respect and profound confidence.”

Reaffirming Bilateral Ties

The bilateral summit resulted in a number of key agreements regarding military and economic cooperation. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an joint economic plan extending until 2030, which targets to boost bilateral trade to one hundred billion dollars each year by the end of the decade.

Furthermore pledged to restructure their defence ties. Even as Russia continues to be India's primary supplier of arms, the volume has diminished over the past decade as India aims to broaden its procurement.

The official release emphasized plans for the co-development of cutting-edge weapons platforms, even if direct reference of deals for the fifth-generation aircraft were omitted.

Overall, Moscow and Delhi reiterated that during the “ongoing challenging, tense, and unpredictable global landscape, Russian-Indian ties remain durable to outside forces.”
