Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
