Larian Studios Explains Its Implementation of Machine Learning for Next Project
The developer behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently shown its new project, generating a wave of excitement within the gaming community. However, follow-up statements from the studio's figurehead have introduced nuance to the narrative, addressing the studio's philosophy toward generative artificial intelligence.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a latest clarification, Larian's director explained that the company is employing generative AI for specific supporting functions. These involve enhancing pitch decks, generating rough visual ideas, and writing placeholder dialogue.
Importantly, Vincke emphasized that the final assets in the game will be authored solely by human creatives. "Larian is writing all the content ourselves," he said.
We are constantly increasing our team of storytellers and are actively forming narrative groups.
As this area is being particularly called out — we currently have twenty-three visual developers and have job openings for more artists.
All our efforts we do is incremental and aimed at enabling creatives to spend more time on making content.
Any ML tool implemented properly is a boost to a artist's process, not a replacement for their craft.
Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path
The revelation of AI usage initially generated concern among a segment of the community. In response, Vincke offered further elaboration on online platforms.
"We use machine learning to research ideas, just like we use search engines and art books," he wrote. "In the conceptual planning process we use it as a simple sketch for composition which we then replace with authentic illustrations."
He noted, "Larian brings on talent for their creative vision, not for their capacity to replicate what a algorithm proposes."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had previously outlined the team's practical method to AI and ML, categorizing its use into primary functions:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: This includes polishing mocap data, voice editing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adjusting assets for various species.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to quickly build rough mock-ups of mechanics to test concepts before complete production.
- Experimental Frontiers: Exploring how AI could one day enhance new forms of player agency, particularly in creating unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.
He specifically affirmed that key artistic disciplines — such as visual art — are not departments where the company is replacing human involvement. On the contrary, Larian is expanding its staff in these exact fields.
"We are neither releasing a game with any AI components, nor considering reducing teams to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
