Crew Member Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Harassment Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
